Case Study | Abscess

Audra was very patient with my horse who was in so much pain she could barely weight bear on the hoof she was trying to image.  The results of the ThermScan images helped me target poulticing to the coronet band and heel area. The next day, pus started to come out of the coronet band!  Audra advised that poulticing her sole wasn’t going to drain the abscess.  I didn’t realise that heavier horses can develop an extra sole; and subsequent x-rays showed that she did indeed have a second sole, so by targeting the poulticing to the heel and coronet areas, the abscess drained eventually and she became sound.  I had been poulticing the sole for a few weeks to no avail; the ThermScan images helped me target poulticing in the right areas, which had an immediate effect.  Great result!

Horse DetailsClydesdale, 10 year old, Riding Club.
HistoryThe horse presented lame N/S (LT) fore for 2 weeks.  The vet attended and suspected an abscess.  Poultice was applied to sole of N/S (LT) fore but did not resolve the lameness. An appointment with ThermScan was arranged with a view to developing a more accurate picture of what was happening.
DiagnosticsThermScan performed full body thermal scan and produced a comprehensive report which was explained to the owner.  Relevant images are shown below:
OutcomeThermScan’s report identified 2 distinct areas of abnormal thermal pattern N/S (LT) fore – coronary band and heel – not the sole. The diagnosis of an abscess was supported however ThermScan’s report was able to assist in redirecting poultice efforts and subsequently enable resolution. Horse is now sound.
