Case Study | Suspensory Desmitis

3 years ago my horse had a panic attack in the lorry – he was never sound after that. Vets came and x-rayed and did full work ups to no avail. They couldn’t get to the bottom of it. Due to the problem in the lorry I didn’t want to travel him to get an MRI so I contacted Audra who I have used before with great success. The thermal imaging picked up various hot spots but one of which was his left hind hock and suspensory area. This was completely out of the blue as he had always been lame in front and never behind. He got scanned and they located hind suspensory problems. After rest and rehab he is fully back in work and has just started jumping again. I thoroughly recommend Audra and the thermal imaging as without it and my amazing physio and farrier he’d be a grass cutter.

Horse DetailsWarmblood, 6 year old, Showjumper.
HistoryThe horse had a traumatic incident whilst being transported and had been lame at the back since. ThermScan was contacted to provide an initial assessment of the cause of the lameness.
DiagnosticsThermScan performed full body thermal scan and produced a comprehensive report which was explained to the owner.  Relevant images are shown below:
OutcomeThermScan’s report identified clinically significant abnormal hyperthermic patterns on both hind limbs, but particularly on the N/S (LT) hind. In addition clinically significant abnormal thermal pattern was noted at thoracic spine and pelvis. As a result the owner had further diagnostics carried out by the vet which confirmed proximal suspensory desmitis N/S (LT) hind with milder desmitis noted O/S (RT).  Thoracolumbar pain noted on examination was suspected to be secondary to multiple limb lameness.  The horse was turned away following diagnosis and is now back in work following recovery.
