Case Study | Vascular Disease

The vet confirmed Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis. The hot spots shown on the scan rang alarm bells.  This condition, if you’re not familiar with it, is a dysfunction of the immune system and causes pain and discomfort that can be displayed in other forms e.g. head shaking or whatever the horse finds relief from.  In other words my horse has been trying to tell me for a long time that he was uncomfortable, but I could not join up the dots, so to speak.  It’s basically a Strep A bacterial infection that affects the walls of the veins causing discomfort. Your thermal scan was the key!  My horse is now on antibiotics and steroids and has shown immediate improvement, so watch this space 😃

Horse DetailsCob, 14 year old, recreational riding.
HistoryThe horse presented with long standing intermittent head shaking.  The vet had examined the horse but no definitive diagnosis had been achieved.  The horse was stiff O/S (RT) hind and was reluctant to weight bear. Latterly, due to no diagnosis being established, the horse had been labelled as having behavioural issues.  An appointment with ThermScan was arranged by the horse’s owner, as a final attempt to find out what was going on. At this point the horse had been classed as dangerous due to its behaviour.
DiagnosticsThermScan performed full body thermal scan and produced a comprehensive report which was explained to the owner.  Relevant images are shown below:
OutcomeThermScan’s report identified extensive abnormal thermal pattern in various locations. As a result the owner contacted the vet, post scan, and arranged a further visit.  Due to ThermScan’s report and the thermal images it contained a simple blood test was taken, which confirmed Leukocytoclastic Vasculitis. Treatment via antibiotics and steroids resulted in a swift recovery.
